Kihachiro Onitsuka has an epiphany at the sight of vinegared octopus on his dinner table, “suction cup Basketball shoes” after seeing a vinegared octopus for dinner.
By deepening the dimples over the entire sole to resemble octopus suction cups, both starting and stopping performance are improved.
The words “Kihachiro Onitsuka” can be seen on the design registration certificate for the shoe soles.

The 1961 catalog included a page on “Trademarks,” which stated that “Trademarks make companies prosper.” In other words, the importance of the brand was being taught from that time on.

The ASICS stripes(at the time the Mexico line), now the iconic symbol of ASICS shoes, was introduced in 1966.
The earliest trademark registration of the ASICS stripes was in the United Kingdom.

In the Onitsuka Co., Ltd. company brochure of the year 1973, the number of registered patents and trademarks was introduced.
It stated: “We listen closely to what athletes have to say, scientifically analyze and research the elements that are applicable to them, and have unique product development technology and many patents...”.
This is connected to the current “ASICS Design Philosophy”.
