- What led you to choose ASICS?
It was the company’s strong research and development capabilities in creating products. ASICS conducts a comprehensive range of research — from human characteristics studies to production technologies — under one roof at its research institute. The wealth of accumulated data and technical expertise was something I found incredibly appealing. Moreover, the company’s well-equipped environment allows for hands - on experience in both product development and research. I believe the real value of the knowledge gained at the research institute isn’t just in the research itself but in translating that into products that improve people's quality of life (QOL). This is one of the most fulfilling aspects of being a researcher in a manufacturing company, and I see it as one way I can contribute to society.
Additionally, I was drawn to ASICS because about 70% of its sales come from overseas. As a global brand originating in Japan, ASICS has a unique opportunity to expand its business on a worldwide scale, helping to improve the health and growth of athletes around the globe.
Can you describe your current job responsibilities?
I am involved in the research and development of sports shoes such as tennis and basketball footwear. My specific focus is analyzing human body movements and designing shoe structures that align with these movements.
To identify the needs of target users, including top athletes, we measure foot shape data and the 3D coordinates of various parts of the body during motion using specialized equipment. Using this data, we first quantify the factors that affect injuries and performance, then formulate the functional concept for the shoes. Next, we determine the design guidelines for the shoe’s structure and, utilizing computer simulations and 3D printing, we proceed with the design and prototyping stages.
Once we have a prototype, we perform performance evaluations, discuss the results with development and design teams, and refine the shoe’s performance. This iterative cycle continues multiple times until we reach the final product ready for market.
What would you like to challenge in the future at ASICS?
I want to create products that inspire people to choose sports as one of the many ways to bring vitality into their lives. To do that, I aim to produce innovative products and technologies that are centered around a thorough understanding of the human body. By conducting in-depth research focused on the human at the heart of our designs, I aspire to create products that excite and engage users, sparking their passion for sports.
